Diablo Symphony Explores the Power of Water Captured in Music

Experience the power of water through music in this captivating program with the Diablo Symphony, presented on March 30, 2:00 p.m. at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Be among the first to hear Composer-in-Residence Josiah Catalan’s world premiere of "The Sea in Us," a DSO commission exploring the ocean’s transformative energy. Cellist Evan Kahn takes center stage with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s stormy Cello Concerto and Alexander Glazunov’s flowing "Mélodie" before Claude Debussy’s La Mer immerses you in a breathtaking portrait of the sea inspired by the composer’s fascination with the ocean as a force of nature and reflection of human emotion. The concert will be conducted by San Francisco–based conductor Jaco Wong, who currently serves as an assistant conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. Wong is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and served as assistant conductor of the Oakland Symphony for three years. Cellist Evans holds principal positions in the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, the New Century Chamber Orchestra, Opera San Jose, and the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. Catalan is the recipient of multiple awards from organizations such as NACUSA (National Association of Composers USA) and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. His music has been commissioned and performed internationally by individuals and groups such as the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Empyrean Ensemble, and the Lydian and Arditti String Quartets.
